Networks!  Let's talk about networks

Today's Topic:  What is computer science?
	- Are we really scientists?
	- Do you have to become one?

An example:  The WSU Smart home
	- Lifespan is increasing
	- So is health care and nursing home cost
	- People don't like nursing homes
	- Can we fix it with technology?
		+ Depends what they need

Are ceiling sensors even the right way?
	- Power use, AC power and waveform disruption

Corporate science:
	- Can be profitable!
	- Google, etc. employ "data scientists"

That's not what everyone wants.
An example:  Logos and having a Ph.D
	- The only non-starter
	- Data caching is not a new art
	- But it's useful!

Programming can be profitable
	- So says the Internet

Profitability as a measure of usefulness:
	What can technology do for people?
		- A mundane example:  Laundry
		- A friend moves to the East Coast:  1870 vs. Now
		- Transportation:  Heaters and phone interface in the Leaf
	People will pay for what they find useful

What you probably won't want to do after this major:
	- Information Technology
	- Fix computers
	- It's still good to know how!
